Beehive

In our back yard in the apple tree there is a huge beehive.

We have been watching it get bigger and bigger. It is bigger than my face. You can see the bees making their hive around an apple. Half of the apple is in the hive and the other half is out.

There are lots of black bees that live in the hive.

Emily, I'm so proud of you watching that behive grow through the summer. You are an entomologist just like me! Most people would knock it down because they would be afraid, but you learn about paper wasps and watch and learn about them. And you learned that they aren't dangerous if you don't bother them! Good job! You are a very brave and very smart girl. I'm very proud of you. After the summer when the wasps have died we will have to hang that in your room to remember you study.

Love,

Dad

Hi Em,
I think the wasp you have is called the Bald Face Wasp. Here is a link to a wikipedia artical where you can read more about it (click here)!

Love,

Dad

Wow, I am going to have to look at that again. That is pretty cool. Did you know I had never seen a beehive like that in person until I got off my mission? That is really cool. You are such a great sister! I love you!

Okay that is one big huge bee hive..scary.So funny I started writing this before reading Steves comment, I am one of those "most people" because I would have knocked it down and watched the bees swarm me! I now will know to never do that :) I will be a better entomolosist (so happy that was already spelled for me)..Good job Emily

I'm going to have to bring Hannah over to see that.

Do you think that the wasps are eating that apple? If so, they'll probably get kicked out of the garden ... that is what always happens when you eat apples in gardens. Just ask Eve.

P.S. Watch out for snakes.

When I was about your age there was a paper wasp nest in our filbert (Hazelnut) tree. My friend Karol and I told my dad and he said stay away from it and he would take care of it after work the next day. Well, Karol and I got up at the crack of dawn and found a very long pole. It was so big and long that we could hardly hold it up. We knocked down that nest and ran like crazy. Dad was a little ticked with us for doing that but was glad we didn't get stung. I'm definitely not entomologist material. But it was fun. We get bald face wasps in our compost area where all the apples are dumped and are rotting. They love them.
